Ciliegiolo, a blend of elegance and freshness
Its origins are uncertain: it may have been introduced from Spain in the Middle Ages, but recent studies consider it to be native to Italy and an ancestor of Sangiovese. The name derives from its aroma and colour, which are reminiscent of cherries. Today it is found mainly in the Tuscan Maremma and southern Umbria. Vigorous and productive but delicate to manage, it produces fragrant, slender wines with a pleasant acidity that makes them versatile and enjoyable.
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, an iron fist in a velvet glove
This grape variety is representative of central Italy and has historical links to Abruzzo. Its origins, possibly Etruscan, are a matter of debate, but its cultivation has been documented since the 17th century. Today, thanks to its adaptability, it is also successfully grown in Marche, Molise and Umbria. It produces wines with an intense ruby-red colour, which are smooth yet structured, with notes of red fruit when young and spicy hints in the more mature versions.
Grechetto, a long-standing champion of Umbrian viticulture
Its name suggests a probable Greek origin, a term often used for grape varieties imported from ancient Greece. Grechetto is a native Umbrian grape variety, one of the oldest in Italy, with two main clones: the Todi clone (G5) and the Orvieto clone (G109). Hardy, drought-resistant and well-suited to hilly terrain, it is the star ingredient in wines such as Orvieto DOC and Vin Santo, and is also highly regarded when vinified as a single-varietal wine. It has an intense straw-yellow colour, is fresh and mineral, with good structure, a high alcohol content and aromas distinctive of the region.
